Iron filters and rotten-egg odor
Orange staining and a rotten-egg smell are groundwater problems. Ohio notes that manganese greensand filters are a common treatment for iron, often cited for levels up to about 10–15 mg/L. A softener is not an iron filter, and a carbon tank will not stop sulfur.
Circleville’s wells are treated for iron and manganese at the plant and are still very hard. A house on a private well needs its own test. Finished Columbus water is not that problem: the city’s plant averages for iron are non-detect.

Questions people ask
Will a softener remove iron and sulfur?
Not as its job. Iron staining and rotten-egg odor need treatment chosen for those, often after a well test. Ohio describes greensand iron filters as a common approach for higher iron.
Why does hot water smell and cold water does not?
A water-heater anode can make a rotten-egg smell in the hot side only. That is not always the well. We check which taps are affected before selling a filter.
