A whole-house filter treats sediment and the taste of chlorine or other disinfectant at the point of entry. It does not remove hardness. Many houses on treated water end up discussing both, and only after a test.

Will a whole-house filter make water soft?
No. Carbon and sediment filters do not remove calcium and magnesium. Scale and spots are a softener question.
Is a home filter required on Columbus water?
Columbus says no, not for safety. People still add carbon for chlorine taste. That is a preference, and the test includes a chlorine check.
